Belriguardo Novo (for three)

Also known as:

Belreguardo novo, Bereguardo novo, Beriguardo in tre, Belriguardo in tre

Dance Type:
Number of dancers:
3
About this choreography:
Katherine Davies, March 2015
Choreography:

This is a figured dance for a three: two men and a woman, side by side, with the woman in the middle, holding hands.

Saltarello misura

The musicians will play 12 or 16 tempi in saltarello misura. Dancers do 11 or 15 steps, accordingly.

  • 11 or 15 saltarelli, starting on the left foot, holding hands
  • ripresa (R) (optional)

Bassadanza misura

Into single file
  • men: 2 doppii (LR)
    • the man on the left goes forwards
    • AND the man on the right goes backwards
  • WHILE  woman: 2 riprese (LR)

At the end of these two tempi the dancers are one behind the other, in single file.

  • 2 doppii (LR) one behind the other, all going forwards
Back and forth
  • 3 contrapassi (LLL) all forwards
  • mezavolta (L): end the contrapassi with a half turn on the left, to face the rear (no extra music)
  • 2 continentie (RL)
  • 3 contrapassi (RRR) all forwards, towards the rear
  • mezavolta (R): end the contrapassi with a half turn on the right, to face the front (no extra music)
  • 2 continentie (LR)
  • riverentia (L): one tempo
Back to a line

For the following 8 tempi there are many saltarelli, though the music is still bassadanza. Thus the saltarelli are largi - slow.

  • all: one saltarello (L) forwards
  • men: change ends with one saltarello:
    • man at front
      • mezavolta (L) (at beginning of saltarello: no extra music)
      • saltarello (R) going to his original place at the left side of the woman
      • mezavolta (R) stopping beside the woman, facing forwards (at end of saltarello: no extra music)
    • WHILE
    • man at rear:
      • saltarello (R) going to his original place at the right side of the woman

At the end of these steps they are side by side, with the woman in the middle, as at the beginning.

Chasing
  • woman: doppio (R) forwards, fleeing the men (Domenico says she does this suddenly, when the men do the third beat of the second tempo of saltarello)
    • [optionally (two sources): men ripresa L while woman does this]
  • men: doppio (R) to catch up to the woman (ending side by side again)
    • [optionally: woman ripresa R while men does this: it would seem easier if both riprese went the same way, but that's not what the MSS say]
Men change ends
  • all: one saltarello (L) forwards
  • men: change ends with one saltarello:
    • man at left of woman:
      • saltarello (R) going in front of the woman, to the other man's place
      • mezavolta (R) stopping beside the woman, facing forwards (at end of saltarello: no extra music)
    • WHILE
    • man at right of woman:
      • saltarello (R) going to behind the woman, to the other man's place
      • voltatonda (R), stopping beside the woman, facing forwards (at end of saltarello: no extra music)

(Note: Domenico has the man who goes in front do the voltatonda, and the other the mezavolta: I think this is in error, and have swapped them).

  • 2 continentie all together (LR)
Processional ending

6 tempi of bassadanza

  • 2 doppii forwards (LR)
  • men: 2 doppii:
    • man at left:
      • doppio (L) forwards, mezavolta
      • doppio (R) returning to place, mezavolta (R)
    • man at right:
      • doppio (L) turning and going back, mezavolta to face forwards
      • doppio (R) forwards, returning to place
  • all: 2 continentie (LR)
  • riverentia (R) (one full tempo)

The men have exchanged places by the end of the dance, so if the dance is repeated, they will swap roles.

Discussion:

This figured dance for three is based on the plain processional dance Belriguardo, also by Domenico.

This version is represented in four MSS: those by Domenico and Cornazano, and two late copies of some of Guglielmo's work (the Siena and Modena MSS). Domenico and Cornazano specify that it's danced to the same music as the "old"

Music:

See Belriguardo (for two, by Domenico) for a discussion of the music.
