Queen's Alman

This is the version given in all the Old Measures MSS save the first.

Wait through the first strain of the music (or start dancing immediately at B, if waiting is troublesome).

A. Do this twice

  • double forwards
  • double backwards
  • face your partner and set and turn:
    • single sideways to left
    • single sideways to right
    • double left, turning in place, to the left (anti-clockwise)

Repeat A, but on the right foot: setting and turning to right

B. Four doubles forwards, with hops.

Finish each double with a small hop, alternate doubles starting on the left and the right foot. 

A. Repeat A.

If the music continues, continue to alternate A and B.

Alternate version

This is the choreography given in MS Rawlinson Poet. 108, dated c. 1570, which is probably the earliest of the MSS in which these measures are described.

Wait through the first strain of the music (or start dancing immediately at B, if waiting is troublesome).

A. Do this twice

  • two singles forwards (LR)
  • double casting (R)(turning in place, away from your partner)
  • single sideways to right
  • single sideways to left
  • double backwards (right)

Repeat A

B. Four doubles forwards, with hops.

Finish each double with a small hop, alternate doubles starting on the left and the right foot. 

A. Repeat A.

If the music continues, continue to alternate A and B.
