Canario: a simple mutanza

Dance Type:
Number of dancers:
As many as will
About this choreography:
Katherine Davies. A simple mutanza I often teach (and use), especially with beginner canary-dancers.
Choreography:

Basic unit to advance: 2 battuti, 3 stamps, battuto

1     seguito battuto al canario, on the left

2     seguito battuto al canario, also on the left

3     three stamps, right left right

4     seguito battuto al canario, on the left

This can also be done starting on the right foot.

You can advance through the passage if the three stamps on bar 3 are done advancing somewhat.

It's pleasing if you turn the left side of the body a little forward when starting on the left, and vice versa.

Basic unit to retreat: 2 slow stamps, then 3 fast

1    stamp backwards on the left

2    stamp backwards on the right

3-4 stamp backwards three times, left right left

This can also be done starting on the right.

If you are retreating too far, you can make some of the steps forwards (e.g. make the three fast stamps in place, not retreating).

The timing of the three fast stamps can be varied.

MUTANZA

Advance with 4 of the basic advancing units, left, right, left, right. This will take 16 bars - one strain, with a pause on the 17th bar in front of your partner.

Retreat with 4 of the basic retreating units, left, right, left, right. This will also take one strain.

Music:

This takes two repetitions of Negri's canario music.
